About
Danny W. Mullen is a retired historian from Buffalo, New York, who was raised by transplanted sharecropping parents from the deep south. He grew up in the streets of Buffalo before, like his mother and father, he began working in a steel plant for several years until the factory abruptly closed down.
After a long period of unemployment, Mullen was able to enroll at Buffalo State College, graduate with a bachelor’s degree, and become a middle school teacher with the Buffalo Public Schools.
Mullen later developed an interest in theater and became a member of the Ujima Theater Group. After performing and directing at Ujima, he was chosen by its esteemed founder and artistic director Lorna C. Hill to be the lead in the company’s production of ‘Purlie Victorious’ by Ossie Davis. It was at this time that Mullen serendipitously met Ida Mae Holland, PhD, the renowned playwright and author of ‘From the Mississippi Delta.’ It was under her tutelage that Danny W. Mullen was able to gain his Master’s Degree from the University of Buffalo in American Studies and write/perform his first one-man published play ‘President General Marcus Garvey.’
Subsequently, Professor Danny W. Mullen has gone on to teach classes at the University of Buffalo, Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC, and the University of Phoenix.
Having traveled extensively in the People's Republic of China, Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean, Danny W. Mullen has relocated to Charlotte, NC where he continues to write poetry, history books, and most notably perform a well-traveled one-man off Broadway production of ‘Backstage with Louis Armstrong.’
